93. Why You’re Exhausted (Even on HRT): Minerals, Stress & Over-Functioning

Don’t Miss An Episode!

Feeling exhausted, wired, and stuck in a loop of burnout? You do everything right: sleep, clean eating, supplements…but still feel like your energy is on fumes.

In this episode, I’m pulling back the curtain on why hormone tests alone often miss the root cause. We’ll dive deep into how mineral depletion (you read that right) is the missing piece of the puzzle for many over-functioning, type-A women.

You’ll learn:

• The true signs of burnout vs. what’s “normal aging”
• What your body is trying to tell you by saying “you can’t rest”
• How I use HTMA (hair mineral analysis) in my practice (and why we start there)
• Patterns I see in high-achieving women over 40
• Actionable steps to rebuild energy physically, emotionally, and hormonally

This one’s for the woman who literally can’t slow down, even though her body is begging her to. If this feels like you — hit play.

Why You’re Exhausted (Even on HRT): Understanding Over-Functioning in Midlife

Today, we’re talking about something that hits close to home for so many women.

It’s that feeling of being exhausted… but unable to rest. Your body’s begging for a break, but your brain’s already thinking about the next 10 things you need to get done.

You know you need rest, but the thought of slowing down almost makes you anxious. And maybe it feels impossible.

If that sounds familiar — you’re likely what I call an over-functioning woman living in survival mode.So today, I want to unpack what that means emotionally and physically — including what I see on lab work when we dig deeper into your minerals, metabolism, and stress response.

Because for most women, this exhaustion isn’t “just about hormones.” It’s the body’s way of saying, enough.

The Hidden Cost of Being the “Capable One”

This is where so many midlife women get stuck.

You’re the capable one. The reliable one. The one who takes care of everyone else.
At work, you’re the go-to person because you get things done. At home, you’re running the house, managing schedules, groceries, kids, pets — you name it.

It’s a full-time job on top of your actual job. And even when you’re exhausted, you can’t stop — because the thought of letting something slide makes you feel uneasy.

This is over-functioning. It’s not just doing a lot — it’s doing more than your fair share, over and over, often to feel safe or in control.

Somewhere along the line, many of us learned that being productive, helpful, or “strong” meant being worthy.

How Over-Functioning Becomes a Survival Strategy

We got praised for being independent, dependable, and organized. And while those traits are amazing, they come at a cost — because when your nervous system never shuts off, your body eventually can’t keep up.

Let’s be honest — over-functioning often starts as self-protection.

When life feels uncertain, doing more can give you a sense of control.
If I’m busy, I don’t have to feel what’s underneath.
If I handle everything, no one can let me down.
If I stay productive, I don’t have to face the guilt of rest.

But here’s the truth: your nervous system doesn’t know the difference between emotional danger and physical danger.
If your brain constantly believes there’s something to fix, prove, or manage, your body stays in fight-or-flight.

That constant vigilance — the need to anticipate every problem, every reaction — literally rewires your stress response.

Why You Feel Tired but Wired

It’s why you can feel tired, but wired.
Your body’s exhausted, but your brain’s still scanning for threats — even if those “threats” are emails, chores, or a child’s science project due tomorrow.

The Pressure of Modern Motherhood and Chronic Busyness

Let’s talk about the parenting piece for a minute…

We’ve created a culture where busyness is a badge of honor.
Kids are in five different activities, you’re carpooling, eating dinner on the go, and calling it “normal.”

But here’s a question I often ask my clients — why?
Why are kids in so many activities?
Who benefits from this pace?

Because when you’re running around, constantly overstimulated and under-rested, no one wins.
Not you. Not your kids.

And what message are you sending them?
That exhaustion is the price of success?
That self-care is selfish?
That rest must be earned?

Saying no — to more activities, more commitments, more expectations — is not failure.
It’s leadership.

What Over-Functioning Looks Like on Lab Work (HTMA & Minerals)

And sometimes leadership means disappointing others.
That’s one of the hardest lessons women in midlife have to learn — that prioritizing your health often means being misunderstood.

Now let’s shift into the physical side — because this is where women start to see it show up on labs, especially on HTMA (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis), a test we use with clients.

When you live in constant “go mode,” your adrenals are releasing cortisol nonstop.
Over time, that leads to mineral depletion — especially sodium, potassium, magnesium, to name a few. These minerals are like the batteries that keep your metabolism and hormones running.

When they’re low, everything slows down.
Your thyroid function drops, your sex hormones can’t stay optimized, your blood sugar goes haywire.

So even if your hormone levels look “normal,” your cells don’t have the nutrients they need to respond properly.
This is why I see so many women who’ve done every hormone test under the sun — estrogen, progesterone, thyroid, cortisol — yet they still feel awful.

Common Mineral Patterns in High-Achieving Women Over 40

Here’s what I see all the time on HTMA results from high-achieving women over 40:

  • Low sodium and potassium: your adrenals are tired, stress resilience is shot, you’re craving salt or coffee, and feel unmotivated.

  • Low magnesium and calcium: tension, irritability, muscle tightness, restless sleep.

  • Low zinc and high copper: hormone imbalance, skin issues, anxiety, PMS-like symptoms.

This pattern is called a slow oxidizer — and it basically means your adrenals and thyroid have downshifted to preserve energy. Your metabolism has hit the brakes.

It’s your body trying to protect you from yourself.

Why You Can’t Balance Hormones in a Depleted Body

This is why we often start with mineral testing, not hormone testing, inside The Perimenopause Method. Because until your foundation — your minerals, your stress response, your nervous system — are all supported, hormones will always feel unstable.

You can’t balance hormones in a depleted body.

Why Rest Feels Uncomfortable (and How to Retrain Your Nervous System)

Now, here’s the other thing — most women say they want rest, but when they finally slow down, it feels uncomfortable.
The silence feels loud.
The guilt creeps in.
The mind races.

That’s because rest feels unsafe to a nervous system that’s been in survival mode for years.
It takes time and retraining your body that it’s safe to slow down.

When Exhaustion Isn’t a Hormone Problem, It’s a Stress Problem

You can’t supplement your way out of that – it’s somatic.
It’s learning to sit in stillness, even if your brain screams “do something!”

And when you start to support your minerals, nourish your body, and calm your system – you start to notice something magical: rest stops feeling scary.
You actually exhale. You actually enjoy it. You feel less tense in your body.

I can’t tell you how many women come to us saying:

“I’m eating clean, taking all the right supplements, but I’m still tired.”
“I wake up anxious, crash in the afternoon, and can’t sleep at night.”

They think they have a hormone problem — and maybe they do — but more often, it’s a chronic stress problem.

How to Start Restoring Energy in Midlife

Once we start replenishing minerals, improving nutrition, balancing blood sugar, and addressing nervous system health, their energy returns.
They can finally relax without guilt.
Their mood stabilizes.
They start sleeping again.

And often, only then do we look at hormones — because by that point, the body is ready to respond.

How to Start Restoring Energy in Midlife

If you’re recognizing yourself in this episode — here’s what I want you to know.
You don’t need to overhaul your life overnight.
You need to start feeding your body safety again.

Here’s where to start:

  1. Eat enough — most over-functioning women are under-fueling. Prioritize protein, balanced meals, and don’t skip breakfast.

  2. Add minerals back in. Electrolyte water, magnesium, real salt.

  3. Simplify. Say no to what drains you, even if it disappoints someone.

  4. Move gently. If you’re exhausted, the answer isn’t more cardio — it’s walks, stretching, strength training with intention.

  5. Create true downtime. No multitasking, no guilt.

Remember — rest isn’t a reward you earn; it’s a boundary you hold.

Your Body Isn’t Betraying You — It’s Protecting You

Over-functioning women often think, I just need to try harder.
But healing isn’t about more effort — it’s about less resistance.
It’s learning to receive support, instead of constantly providing it.
It’s learning to let people help.
It’s realizing that worth and productivity are not the same thing.

Your body’s not betraying you in midlife — it’s protecting you.
The exhaustion, the burnout, the anxiety — they’re not random.
They’re messages from a body that’s been overworked, under-nourished, and over-responsible for too long.

So if you’ve been spinning your wheels wondering why you’re still tired — even after changing your diet, trying supplements, or even starting hormone therapy — it’s time to look deeper.

Start with your minerals. Look at your stress patterns.
And give your body permission to slow down before it forces you to.

If you want help figuring out what your body’s actually trying to tell you, that’s what we do inside The Perimenopause Method.
We’ll review your HTMA, your nutrition, your lifestyle, and create a personalized plan to restore your energy, mood, and metabolism.

Because you don’t need another quick fix.
You need to rebuild your foundation — and it starts with rest and nourishment..

Alright, my friend — that’s all for today.
