Perimenopause starts WAY earlier than you think.

If you’ve ever thought, “I’m too young for this,” or assumed perimenopause was something that happens in your late 40s or 50s, this episode is going to change the way you think about your body.

Because the truth is… your symptoms—fatigue, mood swings, weight gain, brain fog and the list goes on and on—could be perimenopause, even if you’re only in your late 30s. 

Remember, I started around 37 (I’m 42 now) and I was lucky that I had the knowledge and resources to minimize my symptoms after supporting women as a functional health coach for over 12 years.

 

Early signs of Perimenopause

  • Most of us were taught that menopause = hot flashes and that it happens around 50. We think we’re invincible and we don’t have to worry about that for some time.

  • But what no one tells you? Perimenopause can start up to 10-15 years before menopause—and it doesn’t just show up as hot flashes. In fact, many women don’t ever get hot flashes.

  • But they do get symptoms like anxiety, what feels like relentless fatigue, inability to fall or stay asleep, brain fog, lack of focus, forgetfulness, bloating, constipation, acne, PMS on steroids, irregular periods, and metabolism changes that result in weight gain – often starting in your late 30s and early 40s.

 

So what’s happening?

  • By your mid-30s, your very important calming hormone, progesterone, which keeps estrogen in check, naturally starts to decline, so your body is in a more stressed state, this impacts your blood sugar, and your thyroid function.

  • In your 40s, estrogen, your stimulating hormone that gives you LIFE, starts to fluctuate like a freaking rollercoaster – day to day. Yes, it is responsible for making you feel CRAZY. Estrogen is not bad, we LOVE and need her. But she can be volatile. And your brain in this phase of life is essentially freaking out b/c your ovaries are slowing down production of these incredible hormones.  And basically shouting at your ovaries to keep producing them, so you get these spikes in estrogen specifically, followed by a sharp dip.

  • Add with modern-day stress, poor lifestyle habits (we all have them) and nutrient depletion from not eating a whole foods diet, gut imbalances, or from medications like birth control…perimenopause symptoms can hit hard way earlier than expected. We see it with most of our clients.

  • But here’s the good news: When you understand what’s happening, you can take control before things really start to spiral.
  • The key is not waiting until things get unbearable before taking action. If you’re experiencing changes to your menstrual cycle, have mood fluctuations, feel more anxious or overwhelmed, not sleeping as well, forgetting things, unable to focus or concentrate, have achy joints, gaining weight, feeling unmotivated, fatigued, low libido,  these are signs you shouldn’t ignore. I know so many people accept that feeling like crap is just part of aging, but I refuse to believe that. I’m not naive in thinking I’m going to have as much energy as I did in my 20s, but I will do my damn best to feel as good as I can for as long as I can. I don’t want to suffer and be like most of our population – overweight, depressed, anxious, unhappy with their bodies and life. Do you?
